Africa reports over 6.9 million Covid-19 infections, the World Health Organization African Region reported on August 8. The continent is battling a third wave of coronavirus contamination with almost a million new infections reported in a month.
Despite the incredible increase in the number of infections, Africa remained the least affected continent globally since the outbreak of the pandemic in December 2019. With the emergence of new variants all over the world,notably the Delta Variant, some countries in Africa are witnessing a third wave of the pandemic.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) African Region, the African Covid-19 dashboard shows on August 8, the continent has so far recorded an enormous number of 6,966, 723 positive cases.
The continent death toll related to the coronavirus disease stands at 176,661 with more than 6.1 million recoveries.
The five-highly affected countries on the continent include South Africa 2, 523,488 with cases, Morocco with 687,292 cases, Tunisia with 606,114 cases, Egypt with 284,584 cases and Ethiopia with 283,667 cases.
African countries have engaged in Covid-19 vaccination campaigns. Even though the vaccination rate is still low, representing only 2% of the total population, African leaders are making efforts to ensure vaccine accessibility to all.
