Ghanaian Activist Makes Epic 450-km Swim Across Volta River to Raise Awareness.
Ghanaian agribusiness entrepreneur, Yvette Tetteh, has made history after swimming a total of 450-km across the Volta River, from Buipe to Akosombo, in the longest known swim expedition in Ghana.
The exercise was part of a project called the Agbetsi Living Water Swim, which was aimed at tracking the impact of textile waste throughout the country.
It is also aimed at taking water, and air samples every day to check for microfibers and microplastics, following the same protocols to raise awareness about textile pollution.
Tetteh’s initiative has marked a series of groundbreaking firsts: the first time the largest manmade lake in the world has been crossed by swimming, the first time a solar powered research vessel that has been built in Ghana and the first study of microfiber pollution undertaken along 450-km of Ghana’s internal coastline.

The expedition began on 7 March with the launch of a locally built aluminium research vessel.
