National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale South and immediate-past Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu on Sunday took his turn at the pulpit and quoted from the Bible
He was delivering an Easter message to congregants of a church within his constituency as part of his activities during the Easter festivities and associating with Christians.
In a rather laconic sermon prone to varied interpretations, Haruna Iddrisu quoted Proverbs 29:2 and exhorted the congregants to meditate on it.
“When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn,” he read from the Bible after asking that the audience reflect on it.
Some persons have taken his sermon to be an indictment of the Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration’s management of the economy. While others believe he is castigating his own party for the manner he was deposed as Minority Leader and the fallouts since a new minority leadership took over.
Politicians and religious programmes
NDC activists have in recent times teased Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for frequenting churches and preaching even though he is a Muslim. The Vice President seemingly unperturbed has continued to attend church programmes, and lauded the tolerance and peaceful coexistence between Ghanaians of different faiths, especially Muslims and Christians.
It appears the Vice President’s move to deepen religious tolerance through being part of Christian programmes whenever necessary has motivated other politicians to do the same in the spirit of promoting and maintaining peaceful co-existence between persons of different religious persuasions.
