Ghana Food and Agriculture Ministry announced in a press statement an outbreak of the H5N1 avian flu.
According to the Veterinary Services Directorate, Ghana has destroyed 4,500 chickens after nearly 6,000 birds were found to have died of Bird flu.
The cases were detected in seven farms located in Greater Accra, Central and Volta regions.
In a attempt to stop the spread of the disease, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture announced some measures for immediate compliance.
These measures include a total ban on the importation of Poultry and Poultry products from neighboring countries where the prevalence of the disease has been confirmed.
The Ministry of Food and Agriculture also put a ban on the movement of Poultry and Poultry Products within and from the affected regions and districts to other parts of the country.
The Ministry assured the general public that“there is no cause for fear and panic since the Veterinary Services Directorate is taking all necessary steps to contain the outbreak and spread of the disease to other parts of the country.”
This latest surge marks Ghana’s fourth outbreak of avian flu since 2015. The disease had significantly impacted the poultry industry, affecting farmers.
